Windows 95 and 98 registration modification files for importing
older WinGreek documents into Word 97

New 'Greek Old Face' font for Windows 98

=====================

WARNING

These files modify the registration data in your computer. Please
take care to use the correct one for your system.

They have been thoroughly tested on computers set to use the
Western European (Latin-1) codepage 1252, which is the codepage
generally used in North and South America and Australasia and as
well as Western Europe. They also appear to work properly with
other European codepages, but we do not guarantee success here. As
a precaution, we have provided a way of reversing the changes.

WINDOWS 95 USERS

There is usually no need to install the special font supplied
here. However, if you have patched your Windows 95 to add the Euro
symbol to your character set, you will probably find that three
symbols don't work: iota dieresis, epsilon asper grave, and the
opening curly double quotation mark symbol. In this case, please
follow the instructions for Windows 98, below, including
installation of the 'Greek Old Face 98' font.

If not, you will still need a recent version of the 'Greek Old
Face' font -- versions made before October 1998 will not work
here. You can get the latest version by downloading Son of
WinGreek 2.3 from <http://www.uni-bonn.de/~ute404/sowg.html> and
installing it. Registered users of SoWG or Greek Old Face can get
the font by emailing Ralph Hancock at <hancock@dircon.co.uk>.

---------------------------------

To open the registry modification file

For Windows 95, use the file WG95ON.REG.

If Word is running, close it. Then simply double-click on the
WG95ON.REG icon.

You should get a message of confirmation that the changes have
been entered in the registry. Changes take effect at once; there
is no need to restart the computer.

The changes made by WG95ON.REG can be cancelled by opening
WG95OFF.REG.

---------------------------------

The effect

All documents in Word 2, 6 or 95 in which the typeface is Greek
(the name of the original WinGreek typeface), Greek Old Face,
Greek Old Face C, Milan Greek, Angaros or Korinthus will open with
Greek displayed correctly. The Greek will always be in Greek Old
Face; if you want another font you will have to change it
yourself.

If you want to keep your documents in a state that allows them to
be converted automatically to Unicode in the future, always save
them in Word 6/95 format. See the final section, 'Coming soon',
for more information.

WINDOWS 98 USERS

Please install the special Greek Old Face 98 font. This cures the
problem of the three characters that did not work in Windows 98.
If you are using macros to turn Son of WinGreek on and off, you
need to edit the macro called 'Greek', changing the font name
"Greek Old Face" to "Greek Old Face 98".

---------------------------------

To open the registry modification file

For Windows 98, use the file WG98ON.REG.

If Word is running, close it. Then simply double-click on the
WG98ON.REG icon.

The computer may ask you if you want to merge the new data into
the registry. Click on 'Yes'. You should get a message of
confirmation that the changes have been entered. Changes take
effect at once; there is no need to restart the computer.

The changes made by WG98ON.REG can be cancelled by opening
WG98OFF.REG.

The Greek will always be in Greek Old
Face 98.

The new files can't be fully converted back to their original
state. So, if you want to keep the option open of converting them
automatically to Unicode later, keep the original files safe. See
the final section, 'Coming soon', for more information.

COMING SOON

This utility is just a stopgap measure to keep the old WinGreek
coding alive for a bit longer. We are now completing a full
Unicode Greek/Coptic/Hebrew system for Word 97 that:

* imports Word 2/6/95 documents in WinGreek, SGreek and GreekKeys
encoding and changes them to Unicode

* includes a new font with roman, Coptic and Hebrew letters to
match the Greek, and accented roman letters for almost any
European language

* lets you use either the modern Greek keyboard or the
WinGreek/Son of WinGreek layout of letters

* lets you type Greek diacritics either before or after the
letter, in any order

* includes Hebrew vowel points

* replaces mistyped accents intelligently

* offers popup menus in case you forget the correct keystrokes for
accents or special characters.

This will be on sale soon at US $50. If you are interested in
either this or in the Windows 98 version, please email Ralph
Hancock at <hancock@dircon.co.uk>, and you will be notified when
they are ready.
