KORINTHUS FONT

By all means please pass this font on to other people but, if you do,
please distribute it in the original .zip file.

Contents of Korinth.zip:

korinth.ttf - Korinthus Normal TrueType font
korinthi.ttf - Korinthus Italic TrueType font
odarion.rtf - an intricate Greek poem written at Vilnius University, 1604
readme.txt - this file
liesmich.txt - the same in German

APPLICABILITY

The TrueType font is usable in Microsoft Windows 3.x and 95, and in other
environments which support Windows-compatible .ttf files, such as late
versions of MS Word for DOS.

A special version is required for Macintosh, which will be available soon.

CHARACTER SET

The font has the classical Greek character set used in the WinGreek
(wgreek19.zip) shareware package for Windows 3.x, and the Son of WinGreek
program (recommended) for both Windows 3.x and Windows 95 (see URL below).
The font may also be made to work with other, user-programmable keyboard
drivers, such as Compose, FastKey, WinKeySwap, and any macros you may write
to emulate your favourite classical Greek keyboard layout. The font can be
also used without a specific keyboard controller at all, using the Insert
Symbol function of your word processor, or typing the symbol codes on the
numeric keypad while holding down the Alt key.

HISTORY OF THE TYPEFACE

The Korinthus TrueType font consists of normal and italic versions.

The italic version is a faithful reproduction of the oblique Greek typeface
used in the late 18th and early 19th century G.I. Goeschen editions,
published in Leipzig. This design is generally representative of the German
Greek typefaces of that period.

The normal version of the font consists of the authentic Goeschen upright
uppercase letters and the designer's realization of what the upright
lowercase letters would have been if they had existed in this design.

The direct prototype of this font was the 1807 edition of the Odyssey,
Lipsiae apud bibliopolam G.I. Goeschen.

THIS FONT IS SHAREWARE

If you are a Greek scholar and use a computer in your work, most likely you
have already noticed what a pain it was to find a decent program for
classical Greek script. When you finally found it, weren't you annoyed with
so lamentably few available Greek font designs, almost all the same Symbol
design every time? Haven't you thought how nice it would be to have on your
own computer the Greek typefaces of famous publishing companies of the past
and the present, but you never found them among the tremendous ocean of
roman computer fonts? Why is it so?

Naturally, the big software companies do not find this specific kind of
software profitable. Therefore classical software is most likely to be
expected from private programmers, very often classicists themselves, who
distribute their work as shareware, and expect the fraternal support of the
fellow classicists of the world.

The font took a lot of work and time to design. The designer would be
touchingly grateful if you could see your way to pay a small shareware fee
for it. In doing so, you will encourage the developer to create other nice
Greek fonts. Among the Korinthus developer's plans and sketches there are:

Standard 20th century Teubner Verlag Greek font, oblique and bold-oblique
The Loeb Classical Library Greek font
The Grecs du Roi typeface, authentic and modernized versions
A sans-serif Greek font, four versions.

By paying the shareware fee for Korinthus, you will vote for these projects
to be carried out.
